Public taxpayer money versus private enterprise
COST learned that Rep Andy Kerr asked a funny question during Amy Oliver’s, director of the Colorado Spending Transparency Project, testimony. He wanted to know if and when the Independence Institute would lead the way in transparency by making its salaries and other financial information available to the public.
Amy reminded him that Independence is a private non-profit. It accepts no government funds, no taxpayer dollars. It is private. However, as a 501c3 Independence is required by law to fill out a 990 (named for the IRS form) which is available for the public to see free of charge. Just visit Guidestar. Some salary information is disclosed but we do not disclose donors names — for fear of retribution.
Rep. Kerr pressed that he was on the Independence Institute Web site and saw no financial information and urged Independence to take the lead in transparency. Amy reminded him again that there is a difference between public and private.
COST hopes Rep Kerr understands the difference.
